Book the Parks Canada shuttle for 13 August
Moraine Lake Road is closed to private vehicles year-round and there are no walk-up seats. Parks Canada released 40% of seats in April; the remaining 60% drop at 08:00 MT exactly 48 hours before departure — that is Monday 11 August at 08:00, while the guests are still in the air. Someone at home has to book it.
If it sells out: a licensed commercial operator (Moraine Lake Bus Company, Discover Banff Tours), or Roam Transit Route 8X plus the Lake Connector on a Super Pass (~$30, must start in Banff).

Book the Columbia Icefield Adventure for 14 August
Ice Explorer plus Skywalk on one ticket. August slots sell out. Aim for a start around 14:00 so the morning isn't rushed.

Separate from the national parks and NOT covered by the Canada Strong Pass. $15/day per vehicle, bought online against your number plate. Enforced by camera.

Confirm Yoho Valley Road is open (Takakkaw Falls)
Seasonal road with tight switchbacks, typically open late June to early October. Verify before driving up on 15 August. No RVs or trailers; a rental car is fine.
Park entry is free — the Canada Strong Pass covers 19 Jun – 7 Sep 2026. Don’t buy a Discovery Pass; that’s ~$168 saved.

The flexible night
You said you'd move one night if it was worth it. It is — but only in the right place. Where you sleep on the 13th decides how good the Icefields Parkway is on the 14th.
Lake Louise village
$$$$- Turns the Icefields Parkway from a 4-hour reach into a 2-hour one — the whole reason for the night out.
- Lets you start Bow Lake and Peyto before the tour buses arrive.
- Herbert Lake and the shuttle Park & Ride are both minutes away.
- The most expensive bed of the week.
- Very limited vegetarian food — you'll be eating what you brought.
Take this one. The night exists to make 14 August work, and this is the option that does it.
Field BC / Emerald Lake Lodge
$$$- Cheaper than Lake Louise, and Emerald Lake Lodge is a genuinely beautiful place to wake up.
- Puts Yoho on your doorstep — Emerald Lake before anyone else arrives.
- Truffle Pigs is at least a real restaurant.
- Adds 20 minutes to the Icefields run, at the start of an already long day.
- Field is tiny. Nothing is open late.
A good swap if you'd rather have Yoho unhurried than the Icefields Parkway early.
Golden BC
$$- The only option that makes Golden Skybridge and the Kicking Horse gondola comfortable.
- Cheapest beds and the widest choice of food.
- A real town, so evenings actually work.
- Over three hours to the Columbia Icefield — it weakens the best day of the trip.
- You'd likely have to drop the Icefield itself.
Only if Golden Skybridge matters more to you than standing on a glacier. For most people it doesn't.

Catch · Nearly six hours of driving round trip — the longest day you'd have.
Kootenay NP + Radium Hot Springs
2 h 45 each wayMarble Canyon and the Paint Pots are both short boardwalks, and it ends in a hot spring pool you can sit in for an hour.
Catch · Overlaps scenically with what you'll already have seen by then.
Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump
2 h 15 each wayA UNESCO site built into the cliff itself, interpreting 6,000 years of Blackfoot history. Entirely indoors and level.
Catch · Less immediately spectacular than Drumheller if anyone likes dinosaurs.
Calgary city day
no drivingPeace Bridge, Prince's Island, Studio Bell and Heritage Park. Zero driving, and a genuine rest day.
Catch · You came for mountains. Hold this in reserve for bad weather or fatigue.
